Why Don't My Kids Sleep in the Car?!

I don't know what the deal is, but my kids rarely sleep in the car. On the way to Indy, the girls slept for about 30 minutes of the 4 1/2 hour drive. Lucy screamed off and on for about an hour and a half. Then on the way home, Lucy fell asleep about 20 minutes before we got home and Norah fell asleep about 10 minutes later. They both screamed off and on unless we had a movie going. I am not about to let them watch movies the entire drive - so we listened to the screaming. Seriously, what's wrong with my children?

Don't feel bad, Heather. My girls don't sleep in the car either!!!! Although when we drive to visit Dan's parents it's a 6 hour drive!!!! We feel your pain.

Our kids were terrible car-sleepers too. They'd fall asleep easily, but it never lasted long. And this was back in the day of just regular cars, so "touching" was a major issue! When we finally got a station wagon and could put the back down flat, that was heavenly!

We feel your pain! It is almost comforting (sorry it's at your expense) to hear that other kids are just as awful in the car. Even with a movie to watch our kids still cry and complain for nearly every car ride.

I wonder if the problem is the children want the same attention from their parents as when they are not in the car? Or, could it be the car seats they must endure in today's automobiles?

If I remember correctly, the car seat that you had to endure as a child was much larger and wider with less confining straps. Today's car seats cannot be fun for children to remain in for long periods of time without the ability to move about. Would adults be willing to be so confined while driving about? Apparently not, since so many still don't use their less confining seat belts.

I wonder if frequent stops on longer trips would be worthwhile? Letting them get out to run, laugh and play at rest stops with Mom and Dad might help and after awhile they might be more willing to ride along if they remember that stops are usually planned along the way.

Just don't use stops as a reward for good behavior. They should just be planned for along the way. With today's Mapquests and GPS, they should be easy to plan for.

Having been a parent who forced his children to ride from Mt Rushmore all the way to home in Central Illinois in one day with few stops, required a vehicle that allowed you allowed you four to roam about. Nowadays, that would be illegal but it may also part of the reason kids don't like to ride far distances in cars.

Anyway, Love to you and my grandkids

Ryder doesn't either. I blame babywise.

I am very thankful that our boys ride in the car very easily. Ryan loves to look at books and Will simply does everything that Ryan does these days.

However, as I think about it,even though Ryan has always been a good car rider, it might be due in part that they spend 20 minutes in the car each way during the day. If we stop and run errands, it could be more.

Maybe part of the reason our boys ride in the car so well is the fact that in the 3 hour ride to Morton, only about 2 hours is more than normal. That's enough time for a nap and a short movie!
